RSS reader for macOS and iOS.

Overview

Icon NetNewsWire

It’s a free and open source feed reader for macOS and iOS.

It supports RSS, Atom, JSON Feed, and RSS-in-JSON formats.

More info: https://netnewswire.com/

Also see the Technotes and the Roadmap.

Note: NetNewsWire’s Help menu has a bunch of these links, so you don’t have to remember to come back to this page.

Here’s How to Support NetNewsWire. Spoiler: don’t send money. :)

Community

Join the Slack group to talk with other NetNewsWire users — and to help out, if you’d like to, by testing, coding, writing, providing feedback, or just helping us think things through. Everybody is welcome and encouraged to join.

Every community member is expected to abide by the code of conduct which is included in the Contributing page.

Pull Requests

See the Contributing page for our process. It’s pretty straightforward.

Building

You can build and test NetNewsWire without a paid developer account.

git clone https://github.com/Ranchero-Software/NetNewsWire.git

You can locally override the Xcode settings for code signing by creating a DeveloperSettings.xcconfig file locally at the appropriate path. This allows for a pristine project with code signing set up with the appropriate developer ID and certificates, and for dev to be able to have local settings without needing to check in anything into source control.

Make a directory SharedXcodeSettings next to where you have this repository.

The directory structure is:

aDirectory/
  SharedXcodeSettings/
    DeveloperSettings.xcconfig
  NetNewsWire
    NetNewsWire.xcworkspace

Example:

If your NetNewsWire Xcode project file is at: /Users/Shared/git/NetNewsWire/NetNewsWire.xcodeproj

Create your DeveloperSettings.xcconfig file at /Users/Shared/git/SharedXcodeSettings/DeveloperSettings.xcconfig

Then create a plain text file in it: SharedXcodeSettings/DeveloperSettings.xcconfig and give it the contents:

CODE_SIGN_IDENTITY = Mac Developer
DEVELOPMENT_TEAM = <Your Team ID>
CODE_SIGN_STYLE = Automatic
ORGANIZATION_IDENTIFIER = <Your Domain Name Reversed>
DEVELOPER_ENTITLEMENTS = -dev
PROVISIONING_PROFILE_SPECIFIER =

Set DEVELOPMENT_TEAM to your Apple supplied development team. You can use Keychain Access to find your development team ID. Set ORGANIZATION_IDENTIFIER to a reversed domain name that you control or have made up. Note that PROVISIONING_PROFILE_SPECIFIER should not have a value associated with it.

You can now open the NetNewsWire.xccodeproj in Xcode.

Now you should be able to build without code signing errors and without modifying the NetNewsWire Xcode project. This is a special build of NetNewsWire with some functionality disabled. This is because we have API keys that can't be stored in the repository or shared between developers. Certain account types, like Feedly, aren't enabled and the Reader View isn't enabled because of this.

If you have any problems, we will help you out in Slack (see above).

Issues
  • Feedly: Remove feed doesn’t always work

    Feedly: Remove feed doesn’t always work

    For example, when I try to remove the YouTube: LEMMiNO feed [1], I get a Bad Request Pop up with no further info.

    [1] https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UCRcgy6GzDeccI7dkbbBna3Q

    Related to this: When I add the feed in the On my phone section, everything works and feed items are shown. The same feed in the Feedly section doesn’t have any items – but also not in other RSS readers, so probably a Feedly issue.

    Adding Feedly Error: Secrets.CredentialsError error 0

    Attempted to add a Feedly account to a new install of 5.1b1 and received "The operation couldn't be completed. (Secrets.CredentialsError error0.)"

    Feedly appears in the NNW side bar and listed as an account, but no subscriptions/folders appear.

    I am able to use the same credentials to log into the feedly.com directly.

  • Syncing via CloudKit

    Syncing via CloudKit

    I saw this on the roadmap:

    Syncing via CloudKit (maaaaaybe, if feasible)

    I would love to see this implemented. I'm creating this issue just to raise some visibility on this and hopefully this issue can get a few +1s to help shape some of the development.

    This would be super beneficial for syncing between iOS and macOS apps.

    Feel free to close this issue if it's not an appropriate use case for one

    Random feeds become unread

    Not sure how this is happening, but at least once per day when I check my feeds on my iPhone, the app thinks a whole feed is unread. It seems to be a different feed each time, but it's pretty consistent that I need to mark a whole feed as unread.

    iOS: Error when syncing with Feedly

    After entering my Feedly account details (iPad), NetNewsWire fetches the feeds I'm subscribed to ok – everything is populated correctly under "Feedly" in the left side pane; but never succeeds to retrieve the actual items. I get a dialog that says:

    Error

    The data couldn't be read because it is missing.

    The same exact thing happens, unsurprisingly, on iPhone.

  • Unread status no longer reliably syncing with Feedbin

    Unread status no longer reliably syncing with Feedbin

    I'm not sure whether something has changed with Feedbin or in NetNewsWire 6.0.1 (which I recently updated to), but I've started seeing the following issues over the last few days:

    • If I mark articles as read in NetNewsWire, they do not get marked as read in the Feedbin Web interface. After a while, they get marked as unread again in NetNewsWire.

    • If I mark articles as read in Feedbin, they stay unread in NetNewsWire (even after clicking the Refresh button). They do get marked as read after I quit and relaunch NetNewsWire.

    This is happening on macOS 11.2.3. I'm pretty sure it all worked correctly with NetNewsWire 6.0 on macOS 11.2.3. It definitely did with NetNewsWire 6.0 on macOS 10.15.7.

  • Not Found trying to add NetNewsWire's own feed to Feedly in NNW.

    Not Found trying to add NetNewsWire's own feed to Feedly in NNW.

    This may be a dupe of #2055. Raised as new partly because of the identity of the feed I was having trouble adding, and because it was my very first experience of the app, so potentially an onboarding issue?

    NNW 5.1 (3007) for Mac (Big Sur public beta), just downloaded for the first time today because of the new Feedly support, as I've been using Feedly since Google Reader was taken from us, and didn't want to stop (because I also use it on linux/windows).

    I noted the "On My Mac" subscriptions on first load, but because I was importing Feedly, I was going to disable that account. But of the subscriptions in it, one I wanted to add to Feedly was of course the one for NetNewsWire itself, to see future blog/announcements about the app.

    First thing I tried was to just drag it into the appropriate Feedly folder in the app. "Not found". (That's all the information given in the error dialog.)

    Tried copying the feed URL and going to add-feed: "Not found".

    Tried copying the home page URL and going to add-feed: "Not found". Tried it pasting that url from the browser url bar instead of as offered by the app. "Not found".

    Tried opening Firefox (I've only been trying Safari as default browser during Big Sur public beta), going to the blog homepage site, and clicking on the "Add to Feedly" extension I already have installed on Firefox, added the feed in Feedly. Worked perfectly. Clicked the sync button in the NNW app. It found it and brought it down.

    This is the first feed I tried to add to the Feedly account from within NNW rather than its own web-based UI. I'm guessing that's where the problem is (adding feeds to Feedly), as there's presumably nothing about your own feed that your own app wouldn't like. 😉 That also argues against it really being a dupe of #2055, as that looked like being an encoding issue.

  • [Feature Request] Newspaper view for article list

    [Feature Request] Newspaper view for article list

    Hi there! First of all, thanks for making such a high quality app and making it open source, too.

    I tried NetNewsWire iOS and many other RSS readers over the years but on iOS I always come back to Newsify for one reason only: its very nice newspaper-like article "list" view. It's so much nicer than a flat list of text and favicons that after having gotten used to it I truly cannot live without it. Unfortunately, the app has some downsides including limited sync service support (only Feedly and Newsify account) and it does not support Twitter feeds, among other things.

    I use NNW on Mac (the Newsify app for Mac is an ugly Catalyst port) and I'd love to use NetNewsWire on iOS too for the reasons mentioned above, but ideally with a similar newspaper-like view. It makes browsing feeds so much nicer. The missing newspaper-like view is much more jarring for me on iOS than it is on Mac, maybe because I've never gotten used to it there.

    ss-ad0cc626a0e416b7248f86114418c95a

    Newsify-8-642x468

    I'd love to say I'd attempt implementing this, but I'm so short on time these days that I thought I'd start by just checking if that would even be considered. Also, just adding images to the article list would be a nice first step and better than the favicon that's currently displayed, but I think that has already been requested.

    Anyway, thanks for listening!

    I’m finding that it’s redundant to include “All” in the list name “All Unread”. There’s no other possibilities. Renaming it to “Unread” doesn’t seem to introduce any ambiguity. The smart group in Mail.app is also named “Unread” rather than “All Unread”.
