Prevents your Mac from going to sleep.

Overview

KeepingYouAwake

KeepingYouAwake is a small menu bar utility for macOS (Version 10.12 and newer) that can prevent your Mac from entering sleep mode for a predefined duration or as long as it is activated.

https://keepingyouawake.app/

Installation

Download the latest version here.

or install it via cask: brew install --cask keepingyouawake.

How does it work?

The app is a small wrapper around Apple's caffeinate command line utility. All current versions of macOS ship with this tool by default. You can read the manual page here.

Is this dangerous?

This utility will not harm your Mac because it is based on an official command line tool by Apple. BUT I cannot guarantee anything, so use this tool AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Inspired by Caffeine

KeepingYouAwake is inspired by Caffeine from Lighthead Software. I used it for many years, but sadly it hasn't been updated in a while. Eventually in 2014 I decided to build a replacement for myself that was optimized for macOS Yosemite and used the caffeinate command line tool under the hood.

Still using macOS Yosemite?

Version 1.5.2 is the latest release that supports macOS Yosemite and El Capitan.

Help Wanted!

Do you want to improve the app or add useful features? Please go ahead and create pull requests. I'm thankful for any help.

Building the Source Code

KeepingYouAwake uses Sparkle's ui-separation-and-xpc branch to deliver updates. You can build and sign Sparkle with make Vendor. To build a release version of the app just run make dist.

Although it's not required please do not redistribute forked versions of the app with the same name and icon. Thanks!

I just upgraded to High Sierra and I've noticed that my Mac sleeps as normal regardless of whether or not I have KeepingYouAwake enabled. Is this a known issue? If there's any extra info I can provide let me know.

Prevent mac from sleep but allow screen saver?

I'd like to prevent my Mac from going in sleep mode but I do want to allow my mac to enable the screen saver to prevent problems to my screen.

Caffeine doesn't allow it, what about KYA?

    Thanks

PS; Sorry, with screen saver, I mean allowing my screen from turning off.

Sanity for cat owners: stay awake with closed lid, external screen and no AC

Every cat owner will know that these creatures love to sleep on the warm Mac and once in a while disconnect the MacSafe connection. Normal OSX behavior with external screen and closed lid: GO TO SLEEP.

    img_0632

Although more and more no-sleep apps pop up in the AppStore, none is supporting this scenario, i.e.:

    Stay awake if

    • lid is closed
    • external display is attached
    • AC is disconnected.

Optionally, make this a time-boxed, i.e. stay awake for X minutes, then warn, wait another X minutes, then sleep.

    icon design drafts

    Hey,

first of all I really like the app and I use it every day. Thanks for your work. Like a few other users I decided that I want another icon and I did 10 different iconsets that are really close to the old one. Some have only minor changes in the size of the outline. I personally like number 9 and number 5 best.

As uploading a zip with all the data is not supported please let me know how to hand you over the files including the illustrator source file.

I will also try to submit a pull request with the one I´m using right now (number 9). As I´ve never done that I don`t know if this is going to work.

It would be nice to see this included and if you could build a new release soon.

Thanks in advance for this very nice project and I hope you`ll find some time to update it on regular basis.

    Kind regards,

    Multiple language support

Minor feature request. But first, thanks a lot for this valuable project :-)

If you implement multiple language support for KYA's menu items, I'll gladly contribute the French translation. While a minor improvement, multiple language support does matter to some users. Thanks for the great (and open source) software -- Alex

I would like the screen to lock when I close the lid. I'm not sure why this doesn't happen. My screen locks when the display sleeps, and the display sleeps when I close the lid, but for some reason the screen doesn't lock when I close the lid. Learning how much time remains until KYA gets deactivated requires (A) right-clicking on the KYA icon and (B) selecting "Active for...". In my KYA use case, I often want to know at a glance how much time remains before deactivation.

What do you think of an optional feature to show the remaining time directly in the menu bar alongside the KYA icon? Thanks for considering!

Using custom URI scheme without losing focus.

Hi, thanks a lot for this tool, it's very handy!

I was trying out the custom URI schemes from #16 for some simple scripting and I noticed that they steal focus from the current application. So, on my OS X Catalina (10.15.5), if I open a Terminal window and do:

    $ open keepingyouawake:///activate

KeepingYouAwake activates as expected, and the Terminal window loses focus.

Would it be possible to activate it in the background without stealing focus like that?

Feature Request: Always show menu on click

I use KeepingYouAwake every now and then. When I need it, it is very handy. I always specify the amount of time I want to activate for. I can't seem to get used to the "left click to activate/deactivate now" feature. It surprises me because every other item in my menu bar shows a menu when I left click. Though I can see how this functionality makes sense for someone who uses the app every day with the default duration.

Could there be a preference that makes KeepingYouAwake always show the menu on left click? It could be called "Always show menu" or "Enable quick activation" (current behavior, enabled by default).

  • 1.2(Nov 23, 2014)

    • There are no significant changes since beta1
    • Tweaked the experimental (and hidden) notifications

You can enable the notifications preview by pasting the following snippet into Terminal.app:

defaults write info.marcel-dierkes.KeepingYouAwake info.marcel-dierkes.KeepingYouAwake.NotificationsEnabled -bool YES

    and to disable it again:

defaults write info.marcel-dierkes.KeepingYouAwake info.marcel-dierkes.KeepingYouAwake.NotificationsEnabled -bool NO

Thanks once again for the support and feedback everyone!

  • 1.2beta1(Nov 13, 2014)

    • Activation timer
    • Sparkle integration for updates
      • Sparkle will check for updates once a day
      • A second beta will follow in the coming days to test automatic updates
    • This is beta software. If you notice any issues, please report them here

Thanks for 122 stars on GitHub in a very short time and thanks for all the feedback via email and GitHub. It definitely keeps me motivated. This is a fun little side project of mine and I already have more ideas for improvements and features…
