Overview

MenuMeters

My fork of MenuMeters for El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur.

Usage:

If you just want to use it, please go to http://member.ipmu.jp/yuji.tachikawa/MenuMetersElCapitan/ or https://github.com/yujitach/MenuMeters/releases and download the binary. The detailed installation instruction is given in the former.

Other versions & related open source softwares:

If you run Mojave and higher, https://github.com/exelban/stats is another menubar monitor which has a more modern look and feel, often offers more capability, and is maintained actively. It is heavily recommended.

There are also further forks of my version of MenuMeters, which implement more features. You might want to try them out:

If you'd like your version mentioned here, please tell me at the issues page.

Background:

It's a great utility originally developed at http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/ . The original version does not work on El Capitan and later, due to the fact that SystemUIServer doesn't load Menu Extras not signed by Apple any longer.

I'm making here a minimal modification so that it runs as a faceless app, putting NSStatusItem's instead of NSMenuExtra's. Since then, many people contributed pull requests, most of which have been incorporated.

More recently, starting from Catalina, MenuMeters was changed from a preference pane within System Preferences to an independent app. This is due to an increasing amount of security features imposed by Apple on preference panes running within System Preferences, which made it too cumbersome to develop MenuMeters as a preference pane.

To hack:

Clone the git repo, open MenuMeters.xcodeproj, and build the target MenuMeters. This will create an independent app which runs outside of System Preferences.

Display of throughput only seems to work correctly when left clicked.

I have 2 network interfaces active, thunderbolt and wifi. When I left click and open the network panel, the values reflect the primary interface. When I close the popup, the network displays 0/0 with occasional flashes of a number. This is under MacOS 11 (just installed). I believe this is a MacOS 11 issue.

    • when run on server (OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 / Sever 5.0.4): making client time machine backups VERY slow.

  • Added support for:

    Added support for:

    1. Horizontal thermometer bars for CPU usage
    2. Sort CPU usage
    3. Average lowest utilized half of CPUs into one bar

    (1) allows for much more fidelity in CPU usage display - the wide horizontal bars are much longer than the vertical bars and thus can show finer detail

    (2) allows the CPU usage to be more easily tracked by eye

    (3) allows a view of "hyperthreaded" CPUs that doesn't feature the "virtual" cores as highly as the "real" cores, on the assumption that the operating system will always schedule processes on 'physical' cores before 'virtual' cores, thus the lower half of the CPUs are not 'real' and can be averaged into one CPU bar to reduce clutter and yet still give some insight into their usage.

Files copy slows down when "Disc Activity Menu Meter" enabled

    Hi there!

I definitely noticed files copy slowdown when "Display Disc Activity Menu Meter" is "on". Was under copy of 8GB file from my internal SSD to external USB Flash Drive. When I disabled "Disc Activity", copy speed returned back to normal (was near 100 times slower). When enabled -- slowed down again. My settings attached (update interval: 2 sec.). Maybe happens only with USB Flash Drives.

  • Ganging the two network units together?

Ganging the two network units together?

I recently installed MenuMeters 2.1.4 on an M1 MBP under 11.5.1 and I find it hard to compare and read the network numbers when the transmit and receive are given in different units:

    Screen Shot 2021-08-03 at 19 39 58

Is it reasonable to have an option to force the pair to use the same units (or perhaps change the behavior at all times, and not have an option)? I'm a little surprised that I wasn't able to find any prior discussion of this, but I wonder if I've missed it.

I would think the answer for the above example would be to display

    Tx: 0.983Mb/s
    Rx: 1.2 Mb/s

    or perhaps

    Tx: 0.983Mb/s
    Rx: 1.200Mb/s

    instead of:

    Tx: 98.3Kb/s
    Rx: 1.2Mb/s

that is, to display more significant figures, at least in this situation.

    Thoughts?

CPU Percentage color is black even with a dark desktop color

Hi. First off, great job porting the project and keeping it alive.

Being that I do a lot of color correction on images, I keep my desktop a dark, neutral gray color. All the icons in my menubar are white, except for the MM combined CPU percentage indicator, which is black. Black on dark gray is not very readable. In the MM control panel, the color of this item is not user-selectable, which would solve the problem. On the CPU pane, only colors for graph and thermometer are user-selectable, not the percentage.

(Feature request) No option for quitting the app in general and when using right-click on the icon in menu bar

I think it would be convenient if the app had both a quick (in the menu bar upon using right-click) and a general "Quit" option because I can't seem to find any of these. So that leaves us with no other choice than to use Cmd + Q to close the application completely. Overall, the app works like a charm - thank you!

In the CPU section, when only displaying CPU temp (not percentage, graphs or bars) there is a large blank space next to the temperature display in the menu bar. • The auto-updater now sends basic system info, such as macOS version and cpu type. For more details, see https://sparkle-project.org/documentation/system-profiling/ . This is to objectively decide how much effort I should put into maintaining compatibility with older macOS versions and/or adopting new CPU architectures.

    1. You can now tint the colors toward black/white depending on whether the system is in the light/dark mode, using a slider.
    2. Activity Monitor can now be opened from any MenuMeter.
    3. Many other bug fixes.
    4. Probably with new bugs, due to my ongoing rewrite of the internals toward Big Sur.

(The original 2.0.8 contained a bug which made it unusable when the menubar was set to auto-hide. The version 2.0.8.2 I released to address the issue in fact made it unusable in other cases too, which was public only for about two hours but ~600 people downloaded. This version 2.0.8.3 should behave better.)

The release 2.0.6 I uploaded about a day ago didn't actually fix #159, due to my stupid last minute change. It actually made things worse. This 2.0.6.1 should really fix the issue.

(Just to remember, the mistake I made was that when I tried to commit the bug fix, I realize that the some of the lines had only indent changes. To revert these lines, I copied the changes elsewhere, reverted the change, and applied the changes again, but to a different location with almost the same code. Ugh.)
